Counter-Strike 2's Latest Patch Shakes Up Mirage and Ancient

30 September 2026

The September 2023 CS2 patch tweaks grenade physics, smoke timing, and player height on sloped surfaces. Practices on areas like Mirage Tickets and Ancient T-Spawn Water must be rechecked.

What Changed: Grenades, Smoke, and Slopes

Valve's latest update for Counter-Strike 2 has brought several notable changes that will impact the competitive meta, particularly on popular maps like Mirage and Ancient. Some of the key adjustments include:

Grenade physics. Bomb explosions now interact with smoke and incendiary fire. Grenades also apply more force to dropped weapons. And a fix guarantees specific throw strengths at 50% when both attack buttons are rapidly pressed and released.

Smoke timing and smoke grenade. Smoke grenades now bloom over seconds, not pop instantly, thanks to Source 2's volumetric smoke simulation. The smoke dynamics were also adjusted in January 2023.

Slope physics and player height. To address inconsistent player heights, Valve's AnimGraph update now ensures consistent ground smoothing. The patch in April 2023 adjusted player height calculations, meaning approaches and lineups from inclined surfaces like Ancient T-Spawn Water and Mirage Tickets may no longer work.

Why It Matters for Competitive Play

The September 2023 update touches on several key aspects of CS2's competitive play and utility lineups:

Jump throws. Changes to grenade physics and player height on slopes mean certain jump throw lineups and exits may need rechecking. The altered approach angles and speeds affect lineups on maps like Vertigo, Ancient, and Mirage.

Smokes and utility coordination. The new smoke bloom and interaction rules will require players and teams to re-evaluate smoke lineups and timing. Smokers may need to anticipate with more or less gas on critical retake or execute positions.

Site takes and controls. The adherence of grenades and the change in smoke dynamics will restructure engagements on safe sites, like B Apps on Mirage mid. Ts may struggle to control site after key smokes, while CTs may find new opportunities for retakes due to changes with smoke coverage.

Professional players and teams across the world will be quickly re-practicing key scenarios in the new engine before the next tournament, but even casual players should be aware of the changes. Re-check your favorite go-to lineups in practice servers.

Lineups to Re-Test

Some approaches on sloped surfaces may have breaking effects, such as:

Mirage - Bombsite Tickets: Jump-throws, molotovs, and smokes may be affected - B Apps: Jump-throws and molotovs - Upper Tunnels: Jump-throws up

Ancient - B Ramp: Smokes, flashbangs, and molotovs - T-Spawn Water: Anything thrown from the sloped surfaces - CT Mid: Multiple angles affected by smokes

Vertigo - A Ramp: Similar impact to Ancient B Ramp - B Ramp: Jump-throws and flashes may break

These lineups are just a few examples—smoke and molotov setups across the board, such as on Inferno, Dust 2 and Mirage will need reevaluation following the smoke physics and movement height changes.

Since its launch, CS2 has seen a series of patches and tuning passes that adjust grenade and smoke physics. A previous update covered CS2 grenade fundamentals, including grenade speeds, bounces, and collisions. That update was further refined when Valve overhauled smoke physics. After that major update, the team focused on smaller, targeted changes to specific grenades and maps.

The April 2023 AnimGraph patch fundamentally altered the engine's physics and animation calculations. The changes in player height on slopes had a ripple effect on jump-throws, smokes, and even crouch-peeks around the map. Teams had to reassess key strategies on a map-by-map basis.

This September 2023 update builds on that foundational work, smoothing out some rough edges while creating new challenges for both CT and T sides. Some previously reliable lineups may no longer work, but with practice, new meta strategies will emerge.

Players are already testing the changes, discussing findings on forums and Reddit. The fastest adapting teams will have an edge in upcoming tournaments and matches—players staying up-to-date with these changes will benefit during matches on Mirage, Ancient and other affected maps.
